ACCRA, Ghana — Gomoa Central Member of Parliament Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, has led a delegation from AKA Energy Systems to meet President John Dramani Mahama over preparations for a proposed 270-megawatt solar energy project in the Gomoa area.
According to a statement published by A-Plus, the delegation, headed by the Chief Executive Officer of AKA Energy Systems, formally briefed President Mahama on plans to develop the solar project to provide power for the Gomoa Special Economic Zone and the Gomoa Eco Park.
The Gomoa Special Economic Zone is being positioned as a major manufacturing, industrial and commercial hub, while the planned renewable-energy facility is expected to provide dedicated power support for the development.
270MW Solar Project to Be Developed in Phases
A-Plus said preparations have begun toward construction of the 270MW facility, which will be developed in phases.
The delegation assured President Mahama that Phase One is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
The announcement represents another step in the development of the proposed project, following an earlier Letter of Intent and Memorandum of Understanding between the Gomoa Special Economic Zone and Canada-based AKA Energy Systems.

HARARE, Zimbabwe — Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) Commissioner Dr Martin Muduva has died after allegedly being attacked with an axe during a suspected domestic dispute in Dzivarasekwa Extension, Harare.
Muduva reportedly succumbed to his injuries at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals on Wednesday morning, September 9, 2026, after being admitted following the incident on Tuesday night.
According to reports, Muduva was allegedly struck twice with an axe. His wife was also taken to hospital and reportedly died after allegedly ingesting poison.

New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua has declared that the Ashanti Region will play a decisive role in determining whether the party returns to power in the 2028 general elections.

Four Ghanaians were killed in South Africa between April and July 2026 amid renewed xenophobic attacks against African nationals, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has disclosed.

According to Mr Ablakwa, the deaths occurred in different parts of South Africa as anti-foreigner sentiments intensified from April 2026.
Four Ghanaians Lost Their Lives
The Minister said the four Ghanaian nationals were killed or died in circumstances linked to the wider crisis affecting African migrants in South Africa.
Among those identified was Bashiru Issahaq, who was killed in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, on June 30, 2026, during anti-immigrant violence.
Kwadwo Antwi was reportedly killed on July 18, 2026, in Prieska in the Northern Cape, while Amoonu Jailor Nash was killed on April 3, 2026, in East London.
Ebenezer Ayi Tawiah, who was reportedly unable to access medical care amid the harassment and insecurity, died on August 17, 2026, upon arrival at Kotoka International Airport.

Mr Ablakwa said the Ghanaian government is pursuing diplomatic and legal avenues to ensure accountability for the deaths.
Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria lodged diplomatic protests with South African authorities and filed complaints with the South African Police Service over the incidents.
The government has also called for transparent investigations into the circumstances surrounding the deaths and appropriate action against those found responsible.
Nearly 2,000 Ghanaians Evacuated
The disclosure came as Ghana concluded an evacuation exercise that brought vulnerable citizens home from South Africa following the renewed wave of xenophobic attacks and intimidation.
The exercise, which began on May 27 and ended on September 4, 2026, brought home 1,964 Ghanaians, according to the Foreign Affairs Ministry’s account of the operation.
The government spent GH¢49.72 million on the evacuation, covering chartered flights, commercial tickets, ground transportation, accommodation, feeding, medical care and reintegration support.

The engagements were specifically designed to empower women to participate actively in decision-making processes affecting their communities and strengthen their understanding of mining, community and human rights.
Women From Seven Lithium Communities Engage
The forums were held at Krofu and Ewoyaa in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese District on Thursday, September 3, and Friday, September 4, 2026, respectively.
About 100 community members, mainly women, participated in the engagements. They came from seven communities in the Ewoyaa Lithium Project area: Ewoyaa, Abonko, Anokyi, Afrangua, Krofu, Ansaadze and Krampakrom.
The engagements built on earlier focus group discussions that identified information gaps among women concerning land acquisition, compensation, environmental impacts, health concerns, livelihoods and participation in decision-making.

Wacam Associate Executive Director, Mrs. Hannah Owusu-Koranteng, who led the discussions, educated participants on “Mining and Development,” including the potential effects and benefits of mining and the importance of land.
She stressed that women must be actively involved in decisions concerning mineral exploitation because they can be disproportionately affected by changes to land, livelihoods and community resources resulting from mining.
Wacam Technical Director, Lawyer Kwaku Afari, also took participants through their rights and how to assert them in the context of mineral exploitation, with particular emphasis on legal awareness and access to justice.
Compensation and Community Benefits Among Key Concerns
Participants raised concerns including delays in compensation payments, the moratorium on properties and the benefits communities can expect from lithium exploitation.
The forums provided an opportunity for residents to discuss these concerns while gaining practical knowledge about their rights and possible avenues for engagement.
Mining Communities Share Experiences
The programme also incorporated peer learning, with community members from Ayanfuri and Breman-Brofoyedur in the Upper Denkyira West District and Kenyasi in the Ahafo Region sharing experiences from mining operations involving Perseus Mining Ghana Limited and Newmont Ghana Gold Company Limited.
The participants shared both successes and challenges, as well as demands for more responsible mining practices in their respective communities.
For residents of the seven Ewoyaa-area communities, the exchange provided an opportunity to learn from communities that have already experienced the social and economic realities associated with large-scale mining.
Feminist Mining Initiative Seeks Stronger Community Participation
The forums form part of Wacam’s broader Feminist Mining Initiative, which seeks to strengthen community participation, improve accountability in Ghana’s critical minerals sector and ensure meaningful inclusion of women, youth and vulnerable groups in decisions concerning lithium extraction.
Wacam’s earlier work under the initiative identified gaps in women’s knowledge of land, compensation, environmental and health issues, grievance mechanisms and participation in decision-making. The organisation said those findings would guide subsequent rights training and advocacy support in the Ewoyaa area.
Ghana’s Ewoyaa Lithium Project has also reached a significant regulatory milestone. Parliament ratified the project’s Mining Lease in March 2026, making it the first lithium Mining Lease in Ghana to be both awarded and ratified.

The latest engagements reinforce calls for communities to be meaningfully involved in decisions surrounding Ghana’s critical mineral resources.
For women in the affected communities, the objective is not simply to receive information about mining, but to understand their rights, participate in negotiations and decision-making, and help shape how mineral development affects their land, livelihoods and future.
As Ghana advances the Ewoyaa project, continued community engagement will remain important to building accountability and a sustainable relationship between mining companies and host communities.
Zoomlion Ghana Limited has intensified efforts to protect public health in the Western North Region with a two-day disinfection and disinfestation exercise at selected public facilities in the Sefwi Wiawso Municipality.
The exercise, which began on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at about 3:30 p.m., continued until 8:00 p.m. It resumed at 3:30 a.m. the following day and ended at about 7:30 a.m. The timing enabled the technical team to operate at busy public facilities while minimising disruption to traders, commuters and other users.
The exercise covered the premises of the Sefwi Wiawso Municipal Assembly, markets, lorry parks, public toilets, refuse container sites and other frequently used public spaces.
The intervention was aimed at controlling mosquitoes, flies and other disease vectors while reducing the risk of sanitation-related diseases, including malaria, cholera and typhoid.
The Western North Regional Manager of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Mr Richison Nii Ayi Reindorf, said the intervention was undertaken in response to environmental health concerns associated with the rainy season and recent flooding in parts of the country.
He explained that flooding and poor environmental conditions could create breeding grounds for mosquitoes and increase communities’ exposure to waterborne and vector-borne diseases.
Mr Reindorf said Zoomlion bore the full cost of the exercise under its Corporate Social Responsibility programme, making the intervention free of charge to the Sefwi Wiawso Municipal Assembly and beneficiary communities.
The Western North Regional Environmental Health Officer, Mr Paul Kwesi Nutsugah, commended Zoomlion for the intervention and stressed the importance of collaboration among the company, local authorities and environmental health officers in reducing sanitation-related public health risks.
Residents, traders and facility managers were also encouraged to complement the exercise by maintaining clean surroundings, avoiding indiscriminate dumping, disposing of waste at approved locations and eliminating stagnant water that could serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
The exercise demonstrates the importance of collaboration among private-sector organisations, local authorities, environmental health officials and communities in promoting cleaner environments and protecting public health.
