Chief Imam’s Position Revealed

Speaking on GTV on April 2, 2026, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu, spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, disclosed that the respected religious leader hopes to witness the bill becoming law within his lifetime.

According to Shaibu, the Chief Imam maintains a firm stance against LGBTQ+ practices and views the legislation as a critical moral and cultural issue for the country.

Call for Presidential Action

Shaibu called on President John Dramani Mahama to prioritise the bill, emphasizing that it was a key campaign promise made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the 2024 general elections.

He expressed concern over recent remarks suggesting the bill is not among the government’s top priorities, warning that the issue significantly influenced voter decisions.

Religious Support and National Debate

The spokesperson assured the President of strong backing from the Muslim community, urging him to demonstrate courage and leadership in moving the bill forward.

The issue has reignited national debate, with various religious groups advocating for swift passage, while human rights advocates continue to raise concerns about the implications of the legislation.

Why This Story Matters

The renewed push for the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill highlights deep societal divisions and underscores the complex balance between cultural values, political commitments, and human rights considerations in Ghana.
