Ghanaian boxer Seth “Freezy MacBones” Gyimah has defeated Nigeria’s Godday “Zodsolo” Appah by majority decision to become the new WBO Africa Light Heavyweight champion.
The championship bout took place on October 1, 2026, at the Federal Palace Hotel in Lagos as part of the Chaos in the Ring boxing event held during Nigeria’s Independence Day celebrations.
MacBones wins on the judges’ cards
The 10-round contest went the distance, with the judges scoring the fight 95-93, 95-93 and 94-94 in favour of MacBones, according to Ghana News Agency and Graphic Online.
MacBones started strongly and reportedly dropped Appah in the opening round before maintaining pressure through the early stages of the contest. Appah responded during the middle rounds, but MacBones regained his composure and closed out the fight strongly.
The victory ended Appah’s reign as WBO Africa Light Heavyweight champion and gave MacBones another major continental title.
A major milestone for MacBones
The 37-year-old Ghanaian began boxing professionally later than many fighters, having taken up the sport seriously at the age of 27.
His latest victory takes his professional record to 13 wins and one defeat, with 11 of his victories coming by knockout, according to Graphic Online.
MacBones previously held the WBA Africa Light Heavyweight title before losing it to Ghanaian rival Jonathan “Worldwide” Tetteh in December 2025. His latest triumph gives him another continental championship.
Ghana-Nigeria boxing showdown
The fight attracted considerable attention because of the Ghana-Nigeria rivalry and took place in Lagos in front of a home crowd supporting Appah.
MacBones’ victory therefore saw him leave Nigerian soil with the WBO Africa Light Heavyweight belt after a closely contested championship bout.
He is reportedly expected to return to the ring in December following a challenge issued after his victory.
MacBones has thanked his supporters in Ghana and abroad for their prayers and encouragement following the victory.
