Ghana President Condemns Killing of Traders in Burkina Faso as Military Claims Attackers Eliminated

The President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has officially condemned the killing of Ghanaian traders in northern Burkina Faso, describing the incident as a “barbaric and senseless act of terrorism” amid rising insecurity in the Sahel region.

Mahama Issues Official Statement

In a statement released by the Presidency, President Mahama extended condolences to the families of the victims and assured Ghanaians that government was working closely with Burkinabe authorities to ensure justice. He further directed national security agencies to intensify surveillance along Ghana’s northern border and enhance protection for Ghanaian traders operating across the frontier.

The attack, which reportedly targeted Ghanaian tomato traders in the town of Titao, was blamed on jihadist militants operating in the region. International outlets including BBC News and Reuters have documented the growing insurgency across Burkina Faso and its spillover risks to neighbouring countries.

Ghana’s government also facilitated medical care and evacuation support for survivors, reaffirming its commitment to protecting citizens both at home and abroad.

Response from Burkina Faso

While there has not been a widely circulated standalone presidential broadcast specifically addressing the Ghanaian traders’ killings, Burkina Faso’s leader, Ibrahim Traoré, has consistently pledged to intensify counter-terrorism operations against extremist groups destabilising his country.

Following the attack, Burkina Faso’s military authorities reportedly launched operations in the affected region and later indicated that the perpetrators had been neutralised. These claims form part of broader counter-insurgency efforts regularly communicated by the country’s armed forces.

Strengthened Bilateral Security Cooperation

The tragic incident has prompted renewed diplomatic engagement between Ghana and Burkina Faso, with both governments committing to deeper intelligence sharing and cross-border security coordination. The two nations have reiterated their shared determination to combat violent extremism threatening regional stability.
