The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has arrested Chinese managers of Jin Yuan Jia Limited at Afienya near Tema in the Greater Accra Region after the company allegedly defied a state closure order and resumed production activities at its mattress factory.

The arrests were carried out on Monday, May 18, 2026, following reports that the factory had reopened despite being officially shut down in October 2025 over serious regulatory and quality standard breaches.

According to authorities, the factory had previously been locked by regulators after investigations uncovered violations relating to manufacturing standards and product quality compliance.
However, officials say the company allegedly resumed operations without authorization, prompting immediate intervention from the GSA and security personnel.
Factory Accused Of Defying State Closure Order
The incident has sparked renewed concerns about regulatory enforcement and industrial compliance within Ghana’s manufacturing sector. Authorities are expected to intensify investigations into how operations allegedly resumed despite the earlier closure directive.
Sources indicate the GSA is treating the matter seriously due to potential public safety implications linked to mattress production standards and consumer protection laws.
The arrest of the managers has also reignited discussions surrounding foreign-owned manufacturing companies operating in Ghana and whether enforcement mechanisms are sufficiently strict to deter repeated violations.
Why This Story Matters
The case highlights growing pressure on Ghanaian regulators to enforce industrial standards consistently, especially in sectors tied directly to consumer health and safety.
With increasing public attention on product quality, illegal operations, and regulatory accountability, the Afienya factory controversy could become a major test case for future industrial compliance enforcement in Ghana.
