The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and Virginia State University (VSU) in the United States are set to formalise a major trans-Atlantic academic partnership, creating new opportunities for student and faculty exchange, collaborative research and global learning.
The partnership is expected to be formalised through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on August 27, 2026, in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, according to information provided by TheAfricanDream Consultancy ahead of the planned ceremony.

KNUST And Virginia State University Prepare Historic Collaboration
The proposed partnership brings together KNUST, Ghana’s leading science and technology-focused university, and Virginia State University, a historically Black university in the United States with a strong focus on global education and international engagement.
The collaboration follows earlier engagements between the two institutions. In January 2026, KNUST officially announced that it was preparing to establish a collaborative partnership with Virginia State University, with discussions centred on student exchange and academic cooperation in areas including data science, agriculture and artificial intelligence. KNUST said the partnership was expected to strengthen its international engagements and provide a roadmap for future collaboration. KNUST
Partnership To Connect Africa And The African Diaspora
For both institutions, the proposed agreement represents more than an institutional exchange. It is expected to create stronger academic and cultural connections between Ghana and the African Diaspora while providing students and faculty with opportunities to learn, collaborate and conduct research across borders.
Dr. Lisa M. Hopson, Executive Director for the Division of Global Leadership and Talent Development at VSU, described the planned partnership as an intentional effort to create pathways between Africa and the African Diaspora.
“This partnership is about far more than the signing of an agreement. It represents the intentional creation of pathways between Africa and the African diaspora, pathways through which our students, faculty, and institutions can exchange knowledge, pursue collaborative research, and engage the world with purpose,” Dr. Hopson said in a pre-event interview cited by TheAfricanDream Consultancy.
She added that the relationship with KNUST reflects VSU’s commitment to making global education an essential part of preparing future global leaders.
Student And Faculty Exchange At The Centre
A major component of the planned MoU will be student and faculty exchange, creating opportunities for academic communities at both institutions to gain international exposure and collaborate across disciplines.
Virginia State University’s Dr. George H. Bennett Office for International Education is specifically focused on strengthening the global dimensions of teaching, learning, research and service. The office also supports international scholarship, educational exchange, cross-cultural competence and global learning. Virginia State University
VSU has continued to expand its international education activities, including study-abroad opportunities and global academic programmes. The university has also been recognised as a Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leader for its international engagement. VSU
Data Science, Agriculture And Artificial Intelligence
The partnership is expected to focus on areas with growing importance to Ghana, the United States and the wider global economy, particularly data science, agriculture and artificial intelligence.
KNUST previously announced that discussions with VSU were being developed around these fields, with the university describing data science as an increasingly critical global skill in the era of artificial intelligence.
The collaboration could therefore provide a platform for researchers and students to work across disciplines while exploring how emerging technologies can contribute to agriculture, education, industry and broader development challenges.
Global Learning And Joint Research
Joint research and global learning are also expected to form part of the partnership. Through VSU’s international education structures, students and faculty can access opportunities designed to strengthen cross-cultural learning and international academic collaboration.
Daniel M. Roberts, Founding Dean and Senior International Officer at Virginia State University, said the partnership reflects the university’s intention to create meaningful global opportunities beyond the classroom.
“Virginia State University’s partnership with KNUST reflects our commitment to creating meaningful global opportunities that extend beyond the classroom. By connecting our students, faculty, and institutions across borders, we are building relationships that strengthen scholarship, expand perspective, and prepare our students to lead in an increasingly interconnected world,” Roberts said.
A Partnership With Long-Term Potential
The proposed MoU follows a broader push by KNUST to expand its international partnerships and strengthen opportunities for students and researchers to engage with institutions around the world.
For Virginia State University, the collaboration also fits within its established internationalisation agenda. The university says its Office for International Education promotes international scholarship, educational exchange, collaboration and global workforce readiness. VSU International Education
The planned agreement could therefore provide a framework for sustained cooperation rather than a one-off academic engagement, with potential benefits spanning student mobility, faculty collaboration, research, innovation and cross-cultural education.
Historic Signing Expected In Washington, D.C. Area
The formal signing is expected to take place on August 27, 2026, in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, according to TheAfricanDream Consultancy, which reported the planned ceremony ahead of the event.
The specific venue had not been publicly disclosed in the material supplied for the announcement.
If formalised as planned, the KNUST–VSU partnership will mark another significant step in strengthening academic connections between Ghana and the United States while creating new pathways for knowledge exchange between Africa and the African Diaspora.
