Mahama Assures Ghanaians: Power Outages Due to Upgrades, Not Return of ‘Dumsor’

President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians that recent power outages are not a return to the dreaded “dumsor” era, but rather the result of critical system upgrades being undertaken by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

The President emphasized that the ongoing disruptions are temporary and part of a broader strategy to strengthen the country’s electricity infrastructure.

Upgrades to Strengthen National Grid

According to government officials, the ECG is currently undertaking major system improvements aimed at enhancing reliability and preventing long-term outages.

These upgrades include the installation of new equipment, maintenance of existing infrastructure, and expansion of capacity to meet growing demand.

2,500 Transformers Deployment Plan

As part of the intervention, the government is deploying approximately 2,500 transformers across the country to improve distribution efficiency and reduce localized outages.

Officials say this move is expected to significantly stabilize the power supply, especially in high-demand urban and peri-urban areas.

Addressing ‘Dumsor’ Concerns

The reassurance comes amid rising public concern that Ghana could be heading back into a period of persistent power shortages.

Mahama, however, stressed that the current situation is fundamentally different, noting that the outages are planned and necessary for long-term improvements rather than a symptom of systemic failure.

Why This Story Matters

Reliable electricity is critical for businesses, households, and national productivity. The government’s ability to manage power supply effectively will play a key role in economic stability and public confidence.

While short-term disruptions may pose challenges, successful completion of these upgrades could mark a turning point in Ghana’s energy sector.
