What We Know: Teacher Kwadwo’s Dismissal in 2021 and what is currently trending

In December 2021, the Ghana Education Service (GES) dismissed Michael Owusu Afriyie—popularly known as Teacher Kwadwo—citing professional misconduct, including: Absenteeism: Allegedly absent from duty for 55 days in the 2021 academic year without permission.  Failure to prepare or submit lesson plans for vetting.

Gross insubordination, including refusing to respond to queries from the headteacher and District Education Directorate.  Teacher Kwadwo disputed these grounds, asserting he had verbal permission for absences and that there was no clear rule against submitting typed lesson notes. He also argued the dismissal stemmed from his #FixGES advocacy on systemic issues.  GES responded, emphasizing that the dismissal was based solely on professional misconduct, not his activism.  A petition calling for his reinstatement launched on Change.org, but there’s no update indicating it led to reappointment.

No Evidence of Reinstatement or Recall

In March 2025, GES did initiate a process to recall revoked teacher recruitments, requiring affected staff to validate their credentials by submitting documents like appointment letters and certificates.  However, this directive appears to apply broadly to those whose appointments were revoked administratively, not to disciplinary terminations. Crucially, there’s no report suggesting Teacher Kwadwo was part of this recall or reinstated under that exercise.
