A heartbreaking tragedy has shaken Brazil after a tourist hot air balloon caught fire in mid-air and crashed in the southern state of Santa Catarina, killing eight people and injuring several others.

The devastating incident occurred near Praia Grande, a popular ballooning destination often referred to as Brazil’s “Cappadocia.” Disturbing videos shared on social media showed smoke and flames engulfing the balloon before it plunged toward the ground.

21 People Were On Board

According to authorities, the balloon was carrying 21 people, including the pilot. Officials confirmed that 13 people survived, while eight lost their lives in one of the deadliest balloon accidents in recent years.

Investigators said a fire reportedly broke out inside the basket during the flight. The pilot attempted an emergency descent and instructed passengers to jump when the balloon got closer to the ground. Unfortunately, several people were unable to escape before the flames intensified.

Authorities Launch Investigation

Brazilian authorities have opened an investigation into the cause of the disaster. Emergency teams and aviation experts are examining the wreckage while offering support to survivors and grieving families.

Santa Catarina Governor Jorginho Mello described the incident as a tragedy, while President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed solidarity with the victims’ families.
